There will be a greater volume of traffic to and from games and there is also an increased risk of vehicle crashes.

Drivers should be aware of the speed limits of the roads they are travelling on.

Driving at an inappropriate speed puts you and other road users at risk. Inappropriate speeds are driving at speeds greater than the posted speed limit or driving at a speed that is unsafe for the road or traffic conditions such as bad weather or heavy vehicular traffic.

Speed increases the risk of crashing and the faster you go the longer it takes you to stop.

Most supporters and players enjoy the social atmosphere at the finals. For those who choose to enjoy alcoholic beverages, a designated driver or other transport arrangements should be organised before the day.

Importantly do not accept a lift from someone who is affected by alcohol or drugs.

Like alcohol, drugs including prescription and over the counter drugs, impair your ability to drive safely.

Drugs can decrease a driver’s mental alertness, vision and coordination and your ability to react quickly to what may happen on the road.

Seatbelts should be worn by all occupants of vehicles and motorists should make themselves aware of current legislation in relation to child restraints which applies to children up to the age of seven years.

Inattention is another leading cause of crashes and it is important that drivers concentrate solely on driving and not allow themselves to be distracted by mobile phones, electronic devices or passengers.

Police can breath test and drug test a driver at any time of the day or night. Be safe and enjoy the finals.

Constable Stephanie Boyd from Naracoorte Police Station and Naracoorte/Lucindale Road Safety Group reminds everyone to drive safely these football and netball finals.
